Paul Pope Lecture: Dr Rene Breton – The secret life of pulsars and black holes
5th Mar 2018 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
This year marks the 50th anniversary since the discovery of pulsars by Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Anthony Hewish in 1967. Rene will look back at the highlights of the last five decades of research about these incredible cosmic lighthouses whose history is closely interconnected with Jodrell Bank.
Initially suspected to be alien signals, pulsars are in fact compact dead stars which later revealed to display exotic distortions of spacetime predicted by Einstein’s relativity, and to host the first planet discovered outside the Solar System.
Light refreshments available. No need to book seats. Please feel free to bring along friends and family, and to distribute the poster below to anyone interested.
